City of Oxnard Fire Station #2, 3, 4, 5, & 6
Oxnard, California

In 1998, Leach Mounce Architects was contracted to perform work with the City of Oxnard on five of their aging fire stations. The work was broad and varied; ranging from seismic structural upgrade, space addition, demolition and remodeling, conversion of facilities for cohabitation use, and ADA accessibility. Several of the fire stations experienced water damage and roof sag which Leach Mounce Architects was responsible for determining cause and recommending repair work. Improvements were also made to electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. Including design, construction drawings, bidding and construction observation, the work covered a time period from 1998 to 2002.

All five projects were phased to allow for better focus on each station’ needs, smoother transition, as well as continued operation of each station during construction. Leach Mounce Architects worked with a total of five different general contractors.

Some of the significant features that resulted in the upgrades are as follows:

Oxnard Fire Station #2 and #3:
Seismic improvements in the apparatus room and specific walls throughout made this facility better equipped to withstand earthquakes. Suspended ceiling tiles and grid were also seismically upgraded. ADA improvements allowed handicap parking on site as well as access to the building and the unisex restroom. The significance of this improvement allowed for Voting Polls and Open House tours. Upgrade was done to allow for male / female fire fighter cohabitation in the fire station.

Oxnard Fire Station #4:
During the course of design, asbestos was found to still exist on the roof and roof caulking. This was removed quickly and required only 48 hours of temporary relocation of fire fighters. Seismic improvements throughout the facility equipped it better to withstand earthquakes. Sleeping quarters were upgraded for male / female fire fighter cohabitation.

Oxnard Fire Station #5 and 6:
Seismic improvements in the apparatus room and specific walls throughout made this facility better equipped to withstand earthquakes. ADA improvements allowed handicap parking on site as well as access to the building and the unisex restroom. The significance of this improvement allowed for Voting Polls and Open House tours. Upgrade was done to allow for male / female fire fighter cohabitation in the fire station.
